Greeting/Welcome

Welcome children with unique greetings each day.

  • Sing the song "Stand Up" as a welcome song. Use the children's first and last names to greet them with this song. Offer musical instruments for them to play while singing.

  • Say hello in English and other languages that are relevant to your setting.
  • Play music as the children arrive. Consider offering a genre that may not be familiar to them.
Calendar Time

Support children's understanding of the passage of time with short activities.
  • Introduce the Spanish word for December, diciembre (dee-see-EHM-breh).
  • Acknowledge December birthdays. Birthday Calendar Pieces/Certificates are available at https://www.funshineexpress.com/classroom-resources.html.
  • Identify the color pattern created by the Calendar Pieces (see Resources). Can the children figure out what comes next?
Weather Observation

Observe and compare weather changes over time.
  • Invite children to check the weather and write or draw about it on p. 4 of the December Discovery Journals (see Resources).
  • Note how many rainy or snowy days take place in a week.
  • Encourage children to take turns giving a weather report to the group.
Daily Review

Assess comprehension and recall skills with short theme-related activities.
  • Send the December 2023 Newsletters home. The Newsletters are available at https://www.funshineonline.com/preschool_newsletters.html. Encourage families to practice color recognition by having a scavenger hunt to find green items around their homes.
  • Frequently identify the five main senses.
  • Review the Spanish words for the star shape (estrella) and the color green (verde).
Pledge of Allegiance

Introduce the "Pledge of Allegiance." Demonstrate how to place your right hand over your heart as you recite the oath. Encourage children to say it with you once they begin to memorize it.
