Match shapes with this fun ice pop activity.
- Print out and place one set of Ice Pop Shapes on the table (see Resources). Review their names and characteristics. Repeat with each set.
- Ask children to look for items in the classroom that look similar to those shapes. Help them notice that a table can look like a circle or a window looks like a square.
- Give each child an Ice Pop Shapes card and have them find the ice pop that matches the one they have.
- When matching, invite them to count the two shapes: "One, two—two ovals."
- Celebrate every time children try to match, even if the match is not accurate. For example, if a child tries to match a circle with an oval, point out they might look similar but they are different shapes.
- Allow children to compare their Ice Pop Shapes.
- Invite children to pretend they are eating a shape. Have them name the shape they are eating.
- Older Toddlers: Invite older toddlers to match more than one shape. Help them count the sides on a triangle or a square.
Observe: Notice how the children explore the shapes. Can the children name the shapes? Do the children match the shapes?
