START YOUR DAY

Greeting/Welcome: Sing a welcome song together to start the new month.

Calendar Time: Place the July Calendar Heading on the Calendar Grid (see Resources). Practice saying the Spanish word for July, julio (HOO-lee-oh). Use a dry erase marker to fill in the blanks above the calendar. Place the Calendar Piece for today on the grid and say today's date. Does anyone have a birthday this month? Use the Birthday Calendar Pieces to add those to the calendar (see Resources).

Weather Observation: Discuss today's weather. Move the clips to the appropriate spots on the sides of the display, and place the corresponding Weather Card on the correct day of the week (see Resources).

Daily Review: Challenge each child to find three different shapes in the room.

Pledge of Allegiance: Introduce the Pledge of Allegiance, if desired. Remind children that we say the Pledge of Allegiance to show respect for the American flag and celebrate our country's freedom.

Number, Color, or Shape: Review the number nine. Cut apart the July Counting Cards and show children the Number Nine Counting Card (see Resources). Count the images on the front of the card. Say the Spanish word for nine, nueve (NWEH-veh). Turn the card over. Offer small manipulatives (buttons, beads, poms, etc.) and invite children to place one manipulative on each shaded box. How many items are there?

Alphabet Fun: Review the letter I. Challenge children to find the letter I on the Summer Alphabet Display (see Resources). Practice the short and long /i/ sounds. Point to the uppercase and lowercase letters. Ask children, "What letter I item is pictured on the card?"
