You Will Need:

Before you begin, refer to the Listen Sign Language Card (see Resources) to see how to make the sign for listen. Offer a selection of books. If possible, include some soft cloth books and other sturdy board books. As the children explore the books, invite which ones they would like to listen to. Be sure to say and sign the word listen. Read the children's choices. Draw attention to the way the children are listening, using the sign often. You can also help the children notice which books are hard and which are soft.

Continue to use the sign for listen throughout the day. You might use the sign to draw attention to a bird singing outside, to encourage children to listen to a story, or at other times. If you see a child making the sign, be sure to quickly give the child your attention and listen to what he wants you to hear
